Understanding how a social platform works is very important before entering it, whether to connect with the audience or carry out advertising efforts, and, in this case, we are going to talk more about Tik Tok. Do you know it?

In a previous article, we talked about what Tik Tok is and what its main features are . But this time, we are going to focus on knowing how the algorithm works to appear on Tik Tok. Do you know what an algorithm is? According to the RAE, it is “an ordered and finite set of operations that allows finding the solution to a problem.”

Knowing this, in this case, the algorithm refers to the variables that influence whether a Tik Tok video is more relevant than another, which you must take into account if you want good performance on this platform.

On the other hand, it is necessary to clarify that the “For you” section will always be different for each user, even when two people download the video for the first time at the same time. Next, I will explain the variables that influence the videos that will be displayed to each user:

User interactions
Tik Tok will select videos to display based on those that have previously been liked or shared by the user, the accounts they follow, the comments they post, and the content they have created.

For example, in my case, comedy lipsync videos usually appear, since they are the ones I find the funniest due to the personification they give to the jokes, and as soon as I see one I give it a like , so in my next sessions I see similar videos.

Video information
The subtitles that appear in the video, the sounds used and the hashtags that users put in the video description are also taken into account.

As in other social networks, hashtags remain one of the most useful ways to categorize and relate similar content.

Device and its configuration
Such as language, country of location and type of device also influence when displaying a video, however, this is the variable that has the least weight. Although it is more likely that you will see Tik Toks in Spanish if you declared this as your language, it will also show videos in other languages.

Interests
While the three above are the main technical variables, there are also other implicit ones. For example, the fact that a user watches a Tik Tok in its entirety is a strong variable, as it shows that the content was of interest to them compared to other similar videos.

The number of followers doesn't always matter
According to Tik Tok, a video can get more views if it is posted on an account with a large number of followers, however, this does not necessarily mean that the video will have a high impact, that is, not all videos from that account will be constantly appearing in the “For you” section of many users, since the other variables mentioned above also influence the selection.

Indicate what you don't like
This can be done by deciding to hide the creator or the type of video and, in this way, Tik Tok will identify the content that is not to your liking or interest and will analyze the above variables to show you less of that type of videos.

No to repetition
Something very interesting that this social network offers is that, even if you indicate that you liked a video, the next one will not be a duplicate or present the same challenge, since Tik Tok seeks to offer you varied content that keeps you interested in the application, however, it is possible that it will recommend a video that has been interesting to other users who share similar interests.

As I mentioned before, the platform is designed in such a way that people stay as long as possible with videos tailored to their personal tastes, so understanding that will help you connect better with your audience and not fail in your attempt to reach younger generations.

In addition, it will soon launch, in Mexico, a version focused on business — Tik Tok for Business —, where it will allow advertising.
