Signs that you need to change your approach to job acquisition

This should never be necessary. Whilst some ‘speculative’ applications are a very good idea, it’s not a numbers game. When it comes to advertised jobs, you should remember that recruiters do want to recruit someone. If not, they have failed.
If you are not being chosen, it’s best to find out why and then address this. This is much more effective than simply sending out more.

You can’t motivate yourself to apply

You are under qualified

Also very frustrating – especially if no prior experience or qualifications were stipulated. You have 2 choices in order to resolve this: Find ways of presenting yourself as a useful employee – maybe through some other experience that you have not mentioned or get experience or qualifications that you need. In my experience, even a small amount of relevant experience can make the difference. What about industry associations that you could join to show that you see yourself as a specialist? Or attending their events or short courses?
