The European Union's General Data Protection Regulation , which went into effect almost a month ago, was just the first step in a long and winding road toward regulating user privacy. Now, California has decided to follow in the European legislator's footsteps with a digital privacy law that grants users greater control over their online information, according to The New York Times .

This new state law guarantees consumers the right to know what data companies are collecting about them, how they are collecting it, and with whom they are sharing it. In addition, consumers will have the right to ask companies to delete their information or not sell or share their data. And despite all this, companies must singapore number screening continue to offer consumers the same quality of service. In addition, it will make sharing or selling data of minors under 16 much more complicated.

All of these new (and strict) rules will take effect starting in January 2020, so companies will still have some time to adapt to this new regulation. However, once it comes into effect, the state attorney general will have much more authority to sanction all those who fail to comply.

Although the California law is not as comprehensive as the GDPR, this new regulation is one of the most comprehensive in the United States , according to Aleecia M. McDonald of Carnegie Mellon University. “It is a step forward and should be appreciated as such, especially given that we have only just started ,” she adds.
